Chumley's first opened in the 1920s as a speakeasy, by IWW member Leland Chumley, Chumley s was an underground drinking haven of literary giants like Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, John Steinbeck, Alan Ginsberg and numerous other writers, poets, and creative types. Their writing popularized Greenwich Village, as groups of out-of-towners came in droves to find them and the storied bar that didn t bare signage. Nine years after its unfortunate collapse, Alessandro Borgognone has reimagined 86 Bedford Street as an intimate American restaurant that evokes the spirit of 1920s glamour.
