Chumley's first opened in the 1920s as a speakeasy, by IWW member Leland Chumley, Chumley s was an underground drinking haven of literary giants like Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, John Steinbeck, Alan Ginsberg and numerous other writers, poets, and creative types. Nine years after its unfortunate collapse, Alessandro Borgognone has reimagined 86 Bedford Street as an intimate American restaurant that evokes the spirit of 1920s glamour.
